How to turn on my old gas furnace in my new house

Main Post:

I just purchased a house. I have a third floor area that is heated with a separate furnace. I don’t want my pipes up there to freeze but I can’t figure out how to get this furnace started.

I tried twisting the red valve in the middle while holding a lighter to the pilot light area. It seems gas is not flowing. Am I missing something?

The furnace is labeled Homart model 133-90358

That thing might be off for a reason it's ancient id have someone out to look at it before you turn it on. They will recommend replacing and they won't be wrong

SAFETY PSA: Dont heat your house with a gas oven

Main Post:

I saw this come through a couple times in the megathread but figured it needed to be here on its own as well. Please please please dont heat your house with your gas oven, no matter how tempting it may be. You're at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, fires, etc.

Here's a link from my hometown radio up north about it if you need any more convincing

Top Comment: Correct. Your oven is meant to run closed and the fumes are evacuated. Opening it for short periods of time to pull food out and put it in are fine, but leaving it open for many hours is a recipe for a dead family.

Buying / Bought a house without gas safety certificate

Main Post:

Hi everyone this is a major issue so need your help with references i can use to back this up ideally.

I have just bought a house which the real estate agent told me it had a new boiler. This turns out to be a lie and i reckon if i take them to court they will deny as i don’t nt have in writing.

The issue is have is 2 days before completion the seller of the house had smart meters installed. This wasnt notified to me or my solicitor. By coincidence the same day i requested to view the property and was told there may be an issue as they are having them installed.

I contacted my solicitor who said i can tell the real estate agent i dont want this but it wont affect anything from their point of view...

We completed 2 days later and saw the new meter says its sealed with a sealing disk.

It turns out its not a new boiler and there is no gas safety certificate or building regulations for the boiler at all!

Ive spoke to my solicitor and theyve said they have no legal requirement to have a gas safety or building regs on the boiler. My quick google seems to say this is incorrect and they do need to have building regulations certificate and need to provide it on selling the house. Which if i had i would of seen the boiler was fitted years ago and isnt new and may of changed my mind on the purchase of the property.

Please help as its an absolute nightmare of a situation!

Thanks in advance

Mike

That's incorrect, you only need it if you're renting out the property, not when selling it. What is required is an Energy performance certificate, not a gas safety certificate

Forgot to add, building regs is only needed if they made any structural changes to the building, none needed for gas boiler iirc

The White House is reportedly weighing a controversial measure to lower gas prices ahead of midterm elections

Main Post: The White House is reportedly weighing a controversial measure to lower gas prices ahead of midterm elections

Top Comment:

As US gas prices tick higher, the White House has reportedly asked the Energy Department to look into whether a ban on exports of gasoline would pull down costs at the pump for American drivers.

The move is a sign the idea of a ban is gaining support in the Biden administration, in the face of fervent opposition from the oil industry, Bloomberg reported Tuesday, citing a person familiar with the matter.

In light of Putin and MBS trying to ratfuck the midterms in favor of Republicans, nothing should be off the table.

"WUSA9's Katie Lusso spoke with the owner of the home and he told us, a licensed plumber was at the house working to replace a water line. When pulling the water line out, the plumber broke a two inch main gas line causing the leak.

No injuries have been reported at this time. Four adults and two children have been displaced. "

Looks like no one was hurt, thank goodness.

Explosion in Plum, PA

Main Post:

Happened like 10 minutes ago. Heard from a couple towns over. Don’t know much about it atm. Hopefully everyone’s okay.

Isn't this the 3rd or 4th house in Plum that's exploded from a suspected natural gas leak within the last several years? Kind of unnerving if you ask me

Whole house Generators

Main Post:

We live in Colorado, and had nearly a three day power outage in late spring that was terrible. After that looking into getting one but the cost is crazy. Now revisiting and have questions.

  • we are all electric but have gas for our fireplace and outdoor grill so plan to go with natural gas - got estimates for Generac but have been reading about issues. Should look at Kohler or Cummins?
  • estimate for seamless whole house was 30k, seems insane, or is it me? Our sq footage is 3400
  • another estimate for a little over half that BUT only would be for “essentials” - sump pump, refrig, air cleaner (learned our air quality was really bad after outage because our house Is so well sealed and off gassing) and some other stuff.

We just went through a whole rebuild - our house was destroyed in a fire here the idea of shelling out more money we don’t have makes me ill. But because we have been impacted by a natural disaster I’m acutely aware that anything is possible and the idea of feeling so utterly helpless again with no power is overriding. I feel like we need this but I don’t want to be taken advantage of.

Appreciate any info and tips. And a note we don’t live in the Mountains - it’s a suburban setting, regular neighborhood.

Top Comment: There are smaller more portable natural gas generators available that would not be permanently installed. Think about what you want to run during an outage. Do the math to determine requirements for them and then start looking for a genny.
